Summer is winding down, which, for many of us, will likely trigger a spike in streaming hours as trips and activities wind down and the kick-it-into-gear vibe of harvest season begins. Wondering how you can best utilize your streaming-while-nursing-an-afternoon-or-evening-high downtime this fall? Look no further than Weedmaps News’ list of September streaming premieres tailor made for your next smoke, stream, and chill sesh.
‘Evil Dead I & II’ — Hulu
What is it?
The first two films of Sam Raimi’s groundbreakingly whack horror franchise, starring Bruce Campbell as the handsome yet clueless hero Ash, battling the grotesque forces of evil from a cabin in the woods, losing a hand, and gaining a replacement chainsaw along the way.
Why Watch High?
From their phenomenally executed practical special effects to their inventive guerilla filmmaking and slapstick humor (directly influenced by “The Three Stooges”), the first two “Evil Dead” movies, not to mention, the incredible over-the-top third entry in the series, “Army of Darkness,” are an ideal way for a stoner to ring in spooky season.
When and Where to Watch
Both OG “Evil Dead” films are set to stream on Hulu on September 1, 2019.
‘The Mind, Explained’ — Netflix
Typically a YouTube embed would go here so you could watch the trailer, but Netflix hasn’t gotten around to putting it up yet. Sigh. We still want you to watch it, so please click on this hyperlink. Thank you.
What is it?
Vox’s great explainer videos online have already led to an “Explained” streaming series, which premiered on Netflix. “The Mind, Explained” is a spinoff series, narrated by Emma Stone (not the Weedmaps News writer of the same name), which will explore and hopefully explain everything going on in your mind — with each episode dedicated to topics such as dreams, memory, and anxiety disorders.
Why Watch High?
Vox’s “Explained” content fits comfortably in the genre of cool, weird explainer videos that are a blast — if not digestible, entertaining, and comfortably fleeting revelation — to watch high. Watching “The Mind, Explained” while your own mind is resting in the THC lane is sure to be a satisfying and possibly enlightening ride.
When and Where to Watch
All episodes of “The Mind, Explained” premiere on Netflix September 12, 2019.
‘Disenchantment: Part 2’ — Netflix
What is it?
The second season of the animated Netflix series created by Matt Groening (“The Simpsons,” “Futurama”), continuing the medieval fantasy adventures of rebellious princess Bean (voiced by weed queen Abbi Jacobson), demon Luci, and wide-eyed elf Elfo.
Why Watch High?
It’s funny, it’s animated, and “Disenchantment” sports the perfect blend of weirdness, emotional resonance, and consistent laughs to keep the stoned mind equal parts moved and entertained.
When and Where to Watch
“Disenchantment: Part 2” premieres on Netflix September 20, 2019.
‘The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part’ — HBO
What is it?
The sequel to the 2014 mega-hit animated comedy with a star-studded voice cast, where everything is no longer awesome as our favorite rag-tag band of Lego figures navigate an adventure through space, “Mad Max”-style wasteland vistas, shiny, trippy spa-like villain pads, and the dark spaces in your basement where Legos go to die. If this “Lego Movie” franchise continues, “The Second Part” will hopefully be remembered as the closest it ever got to “Apocalypse Now.”
Why Watch High?
See description above. Honestly, If you didn’t see this movie in theaters deep, deep into a hyper-sensory edible high, you missed out. But taking an edible and watching the whack technicolor childhood fever dream that is “The Lego Movie 2” is definitely the next best thing and well worth your time.
When and Where to Watch
“The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part” makes its streaming premiere on HBONow September 21, 2019.
‘Rango’ — Amazon Prime
What is it?
A delightfully strange and surprisingly trippy animated family film about a city Chameleon who finds himself navigating a “Wild West” town of equally colorful (and inventively rendered) animal characters.
Why Watch High?
“Rango” ’s visual palette is clearly inspired by the artwork of underground illustrator and Hunter S. Thompson collaborator Ralph Steadman (so much so that Thompson himself makes a quick cameo in the movie) — a novel style for an animated film meant to compete with the likes of Disney and Pixar. Settle in with your favorite nighttime strain and get lost in this movie’s oddly cute and visually arresting weirdness.
When and Where to Watch
Rango is set to be available to stream on Amazon Prime on September 27, 2019.
‘Total Recall’ — Amazon Prime
What is it?
A 1990 sci-fi action camp fest starring Arnold Schwarzeneger as a guy from the future who goes to a place where they give you false memories as a sort of “mind vacation,” only to discover that his fictional reality may not be so fictional after all … or is it?
Why Watch High?
“How would you know if someone stole your mind?” This tagline from the teaser trailer above says it all. Based on a short story by the influential and esoteric sci-fi author Phillip K. Dick, author of “Minority Report,” “The Man in the High Castle,” and the novel that inspired the movie “Blade Runner,” “Total Recall” is equal parts ’80s action extravaganza and ’90s high-thoughts-provoking spectacle (partly why its poster earned a spot on the wall of our ’90s bedroom at the Weedmaps Museum of Weed).
When and Where to Watch
“Total Recall” starts streaming on Amazon Prime on September 30, 2019.
‘Face/Off’ — Amazon Prime
What is it?
Hong Kong action auteur John Woo’s third and, to date, most insane English-language film, starring John Travolta and Nicolas Cage as an FBI agent and terrorist, respectively, who switch faces and fuck with each other’s lives. The reasons why aren’t really that important. The point is that Travolta and Cage go all in on the batshit spectacle of this batshit premise.
Why Watch High?
Everything about this movie begs to be watched during a long, casual sesh with friends — from the to the gonzo performances of the two leads to the droves of humor, both intentional and unintentional. They just don’t make ’em like this anymore, folks. Toke and enjoy.
When and Where to Watch
“Face/off” starts streaming on Amazon Prime on September 30, 2019.
