Massachusetts regulators shut down a licensed cannabis company to investigate the owner for allegedly conspiring to evade state licensing and drug laws.
The state’s Cannabis Control Commission halted medical and recreational marijuana commerce at Nova Farms in Sheffield and Attleboro while quarantining the company’s products, according to the State House News Service.
The action came after authorities learned Nova Farms’ owner, Mark Rioux, faced pending criminal charges.
Rioux owns or has controlling interests in six cannabis licenses in the state.
Last month, he pleaded not guilty to conspiracy to violate the narcotics laws to traffic in marijuana in Attleboro District Court
The commission alleged that Rioux associated with another man to violate the drug laws.
The commission determined Rioux’s alleged involvement in the illicit market, coupled with his ownership of legal cannabis licenses, created “an immediate threat” to the public.
