Nebraska advocates are targeting 2022 to place medical marijuana back on the ballot after taking a crushing blow when the state Supreme Court ruled this year’s ballot initiative unconstitutional.

The measure would have created business opportunities to cultivate and sell medical marijuana.

Advocates pushing for medical marijuana legalization collected more than 180,000 signatures in July.

“We are left with the conclusion that if you do propose an initiative, it must be simple and broad and have no limitations, even if they are natural and necessary to the single subject,” Nebraska Sen. Adam Morfeld, co-chair of Nebraskans for Medical Marijuana, in a news release.

“We will take this all into account when looking into drafting new language.”

Members of Nebraskans for Medical Marijuana also plan to partner with other advocacy groups to inform voters in the state about candidates’ and elected officials’ stances on MMJ legalization.
