When it comes to THC, the primary psychoactive compound in cannabis, research indicates that it binds to cancer cell receptors, inducing apoptosis or programmed cell death. This action also helps alleviate pain, as THC binds to both CB1 and CB2 receptors found in the body. Furthermore, THC limits tumor growth by inhibiting the production of vascular endothelial growth factor, crucial for cancer development.
On the other hand, CBD, a non-psychoactive compound, exhibits apoptotic, anti-proliferative, and anti-invasive activities. Despite not directly binding to cannabinoid receptors, CBD is shown to downregulate the ID-1 gene, which is related to cancer cell growth, survival, and metastasis. CBD also blocks the production of vascular endothelial growth factor and inhibits cancer cell migration and metastases.
Moreover, combining THC and CBD has shown significant promise in combating various types of cancer cells. Studies have demonstrated that this combination was twice as powerful as either cannabinoid alone, particularly in killing leukemia cells. Additionally, combining different cannabinoids such as CBD and CBG also proved to be a potent strategy in cancer treatment.
In the realm of clinical studies, GW Pharmaceuticals, a leading company in cannabis-based medicine, conducted a phase 2 clinical trial using Sativex®, a THC and CBD-based medicine, in conjunction with temozolomide to treat recurrent glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), a highly aggressive brain tumor. The results were very promising, showing a significant increase in survival rates for patients utilizing the Sativex® and temozolomide combination.
